Development of potent biofilm inhibitors by using click chemistry – ClickBiofilm

Submission summary

In natural settings, most bacteria live as organized communities of cells termed biofilms. These supracellular assemblies display increased antibiotic resistance. In humans, they are therefore involved in the vast majority of chronic infectious diseases. The biologist partner has obtained seminal evidence that P. stuartii porins can self-associate to form adhesive junctions in the interstitial biofilms formed by this species, and that these junctions participate in the initial scaffold for the establishment of biofilms. The ClickBiofilm project aims at developing a new class of bio-mimetic molecules able to counterfeit the intercellular contact mediated by P. stuartii porins. The compounds will be prepared by using Huisgen cycloaddition and others ligation reactions, and the elegant and more complex in situ click chemistry approach will be applied for the discovery of more potent biofilm formation inhibitors.
