Summary

The ambitious goal of LabEx CORTEX is to study the cerebral cortex and human cognition using multi-scale, multi-disciplinary approaches in different experimental models. One convergence is the implementation of experimental approaches in animal models and their parallel in humans, providing a unique level of insight into the cellular mechanisms underlying cognitive brain disorders, recovery and repair. A second convergence is the integration of clinical and basic research. Extensive expertise in signal analysis, brain imaging, human electrophysiology and behavior allows the CORTEX teams to make important contributions to the understanding of pain, motor and sensorimotor deficits, epilepsy and neurodegenerative diseases.

 

Since CORTEX was founded, 2 start-ups have been created from CORTEX-funded projects and more than 290 articles have been published in high-impact international journals.

 

CORTEX has funded 15 high-risk, high-gain multidisciplinary projects bringing together 35 LabEx and non-LabEx teams and has financed more than 22 postdoctoral positions.

 

LabEx supported collaborative platforms in bioinformatics, 3D microscopy, TEP-IRM and fNIRS (functional near-infrared spectroscopy) and helped develop novel devices for portable MEG. CORTEX successfully coordinated the funding of a 7T MRI scanner, which will be operational in 2016.

 

CORTEX welcomed a Chair of Excellence in Neurocomputation to develop specialized courses in computational neuroscience, and 2 Chairs in Neurodevelopment and Cognitive Neuroscience.

 

LabEx CORTEX supports the Master of Neurosciences as well as the NeuroConferences organized by the Master 2 Fundamental & Clinical Neurosciences.

 

CORTEX organizes various events (CORTEX conference, workshop, fete de la science, etc.) to share and disseminate the results of LabEx and is planning the NEURODAY congress, which will bring together more than 200 scientists and clinicians from Lyon in 2024.
