Publication of the final results of the 2021 AAPG: 1,779 research projects selected

In keeping with the first results of the 2021 Generic Call for Proposals (AAPG) published on 30 September 2021, the French National Research Agency (ANR) is now publishing the consolidated results of this AAPG. These final results include projects submitted within the framework of international agreements (PRCI) and projects selected in the complementary lists of this call.

1,779 projects selected for the 2021 AAPG, representing an overall selection rate of 22.7%

The ANR is supporting a total of 1,779 projects under the 4 funding instruments of the 2021 AAPG (PRC, PRCE, JCJC and PRCI), i.e. 500 additional projects compared to 2020, with an average aid of €430.5k granted by project (a rise of 5.9% compared to 2020).

The 2021 AAPG selection rate is 22.7% compared to 17% in 2020. The 2021 AAPG, which a the main ANR call, represents 85.7% of the operating budget dedicated to the calls for proposals included in the 2021 Action Plan, with an overall amount of €765.8M, i.e. an increase of 53.2% compared to the 2020 budget (€499.8M).

63 of these 1,779 projects have been selected on the complementary lists of the 2021 AAPG, using additional funding at the end of the 2021 financial year, resulting from the balance left over from project cancellations, third-party programme postponements and the outcome of the appeal procedure.

1,646 projects were selected over 3 national funding instruments, representing a selection rate of 23.7%

The ANR is supporting 1,646 Collaborative Research Projects (PRC), Young Researcher Projects (JCJC) and Collaborative Research Projects involving Enterprises (PRCE), i.e. 518 additional projects compared to 2020, representing an overall budget of €726.2M. Thus, the selection rate for these 3 national funding instruments is 23.7% in 2021 compared to 17.1% in 2020 at the end of the financial year.

The projects selected are distributed as follows:

  • 1,008 PRC projects submitted out of 4,396, representing a selection rate of 22.9%,
  • 479 JCJC projects submitted out of 1,778, representing a selection rate of 26.9%,
  • 159 PRCE projects submitted out of 773, representing a selection rate of 20.6%.

133 International Collaborative Research Projects (PRCI)

In addition to these national projects, 133 PRCIs, out of 896 projects assessed, were selected for funding (compared to 632 projects assessed in 2020), representing 32 more than in 2020. They represent a budget of €39.6M in 2021, compared to €28.7M in 2020.

Given the large increase in eligible PRCI projects submitted (+42% in 2021), the PRCI instrument selection rate is 14.8% in 2021, compared to 16% under the 2020 AAPG.

Bilateral Franco-German Projects

In partnership with Germany (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG), 69 projects were selected for funding out of 405 assessed, representing a selection rate of 17%. The Franco-German partnership was granted a budget of €20.4M in 2021, compared to €14.8M in 2020.

Please note that the Franco-German programme focusing on HSS, with a €3.8M budget, complements the partnership set up with the DFG (14 projects funded in 2021, for a selection rate of 19.7%).

A strengthened support to implement national priorities and plans

Within the framework of the strategic priorities of the French State and the various national plans aiming to increase research efforts in certain themes, a specific support amounting to €19.49M was granted representing 47 projects, as part of the 2021 AAPG, including:

  • €9.44M for the “Artificial Intelligence” Plan,
  • €3.76M for the “Humanities and Social Sciences” Plan,
  • €1.87M for the “Quantum Technologies” Plan,
  • €1.37M for the “Translational research on rare diseases” Plan,
  • €1.50M for the “Production of biopharmaceuticals” Plan, funded by the French General Secretariat for Investment (SGPI),
  • €1.56M for the “Autism in neurodevelopmental disorders” Plan.

COVID-19 Focus: 25 PRC, PRCE and JCJC projects selected for funding

The ANR has launched three specific calls to support the national research effort and contribute to the management of the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to fund 279 projects with a total amount of €35.6M, and has included COVID as a priority on the whole 2021 AAPG.

25 projects have been selected for the 2021 AAPG, including 16 PRCs, 7 JCJCs and 2 PRCEs, for €10.16M ANR funding. They cover the following themes: epidemiological and translational studies, pathophysiology of the disease, infection prevention and control, ethics and social dynamics, global issues of the pandemic. The projects tackle large-scale fundamental and translational research issues, through a €300 to 700k budget over 4-5 years.
