Joint Translational Call (JTC 2016) for European Research Projects on External Insults to the Nervous System

This call for proposals is now closed. You can view all open calls for proposals by clicking here.

The ANR launches in collaboration with the ERA-NET NEURON a joint call to support multinational, collaborative research projects addressing questions related to external insults to the central nervous system. The call accepts proposals ranging from the understanding of basic mechanisms of disease, through proof-of-concept clinical studies in humans to neurorehabilitation.

The present call is supported by 22 agencies located in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

The main focus of the call is on primary physical insults to the central nervous system. The topics include acute Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) over the entire lifespan.

The proposals should contain original and novel research programs, based on collaborative added value to answer key questions on at least one of the following areas

  • a) Fundamental research investigating consequences of external insults to the central nervous system on a biological and functional level. This may include the development of innovative or shared resources, and new technologies for the prediction, prevention or therapy of disease.
  • b) Clinical research, including the exploitation of novel and/or existing clinical data sets, to develop new strategies for diagnosis, therapy, and technology-driven neurorehabilitation (e.g. brain computer interfaces, EEG and neuroimaging approaches) for diseases after external insults to the central nervous system. Clinical studies up to the point of proof of concept are eligible for funding1.

This call excludes research projects addressing hemorrhage and hypoxia as well as research on psychological/mental consequences of insults, including stress related disorders. Research on neurodegenerative disorders will neither be eligible in the present call.

The proposals should be submitted by consortia composed by a minimum of three and a maximum of five2 research groups, from at least three different countries. No more than two research groups should be from the same country. Only the French parties of each selected consortium will be funded by the ANR.

Selected projects can be funded for a duration up to three years. Funding is expected to start early in 2017.

1 Eligibility and funding requirements for clinical trials vary between the partner countries. Clarification may be obtained from the individual funding agencies.
2 The inclusion of consortium partners from the following underrepresented countries (Latvia, Romania, Slovakia and Turkey) increases the maximum number of partners to six.
