The ANR launches in collaboration with the ERA-NET JP-cofuND a joint call to support multinational, collaborative research projects addressing the Health and Social Care for Neurodegenerative Diseases.

The present call is supported by 20 member countries: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and United Kingdom.

The aim of the call is to finance ambitious, innovative, multinational and multidisciplinary projects that address health and social care delivery at the system and infrastructure level as well as the patient, carers and family level.

The cross-disease approaches should address at least one of the following neurodegenerative diseases: Alzheimer disease and other dementias, Parkinson disease and PD-related disorders, Prion diseases, Motor neuron diseases, Huntington disease, Spinocerebellar ataxia, Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

The proposals can include, among others, the following topics

  • Care pathways and services using the potential of patient involvement
  • Factors influencing progression and prognosis of disease
  • Outcome measures for patients and their informal carers
  • Palliative care of patients
  • Cost-effectiveness and affordability of interventions including ethical concerns

Proposals on health and social care can apply to patients with any or several of the following neurodegenerative diseases:

  • Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias
  • Parkinson’s disease and PD‐related disorders
  • Prion diseases
  • Motor neuron diseases
  • Huntington’s disease
  • Spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA)
  • Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)

The proposals should clearly state the added value acquired through the transnational collaboration and should address the potential impact on disease understanding or for the development of treatments for the neurodegenerative diseases. Data, tools and bioressources generated within the projects should be made available to the public domain and to other research groups. The applicants should consider including patient and public involvement where appropriate or specify future plans in this regard. The proposals should consider the impact of socio-economic factors, gender-related research questions and comorbidities.

The consortia should be composed by a minimum of three and a maximum of six research groups, from at least three different countries. The consortia including groups from presently underrepresented countries Czech Republic, Poland, and  Slovakia can increase the maximum number of research groups to seven. No more than two research groups should be from the same country. Only the French parties of each selected consortium will be funded by the ANR.

Selected projects can be funded for a duration up to three years. Funding is expected to start end 2018.
