5th E-Rare Joint Transnational Call for European Research Projects on Rare Diseases

This call for proposals is now closed. You can view all open calls for proposals by clicking here.

The ANR joins the ERA-NET E-Rare-2 to launch a fifth call for proposals to fund transnational research projects on rare diseases. Fourteen countries from the European Research Area and abroad are joining this call: Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Switzerland and Turkey.

The aim of the call is to enable scientists in different countries to build an effective collaboration on a common interdisciplinary research project based on complementarities and sharing of expertise, with a clear translational research approach. Research proposals shall concern one or more rare diseases following the European definition (i.e. a disease affecting not more than five in 10.000 persons in the European Community). Rare infectious diseases, rare cancers and rare adverse drug events in treatments of common diseases are excluded from the scope of this call.

The impact of the expected results on patients affected by rare diseases must be clearly stated. The transnational project should be based on complementarities and sharing of expertise, demonstrating a clear added value of the cooperation: gathering a critical mass of patients/biological material that would not be possible on a national level, sharing of resources (models, databases, diagnosis etc.), harmonization of data, sharing of specific know-how and/or innovative technologies, etc.

Transnational research proposals must cover at least one of the following areas:

a) Collaborative research using patient databases and corresponding collections of biological material that would generally not be possible at a national scale, with well-defined scientific objectives, e.g.: definition of new nosological entities, epidemiological studies, genotype/phenotype correlations, natural history of diseases, characterization of the genetic/molecular basis of specific diseases, etc.

b) Genetic, epigenetic, and pathophysiological studies using innovative and shared resources, technologies and expertise.

c) Research on development of applications for diagnosis and therapies for rare diseases. Clinical trials will not be funded through this call for proposals.

d) Patient oriented research in the area of social and human sciences - e.g. psychological, psychosocial and behavioral research - as well as health services research and health economy research in the field of rare disorders.

Each submitted proposal must involve a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 research groups from at least 3 different countries participating to this call (see list above).

Funding is granted for a maximum of three years.

General information

Attention: the contact details mentioned below may not be valid as of today. In order to find the adequate contact details, please consult the "departments" section.

The submission and evaluation process will be managed by the E-Rare-2 Joint Call Secretariat (JCS) for the Joint Transnational Call.

There will be a two-stage submission procedure:

  • Joint pre-proposals (in English) must be uploaded to the submission website (https://www.pt-it.de/ptoutline/application/erare13). Submission (electronic submission only) must be completed before January 31st 2013 at 08 p.m. GMT. Only the pre-proposals that will be selected by the international Scientific Evaluation Committee (SEC) will be invited to submit a full proposal.

  • Joint full applications (in English) will only be accepted from applicants who are invited by the JCS. Full-applications should be submitted electronically on the same submission website. The deadline for submission of full-applications (electronic submission only) is: May 29th 2013 at 08 p.m. GMT.

Additional information can be found at the E-Rare website (http://www.e-rare.eu).

Whilst applications will be submitted jointly by research groups from several countries, individual groups will be funded by the individual funding organisation of their country/region that is participating in the E-Rare-2 JTC 2013. Applicants are therefore subject to eligibility criteria of individual funding organisations. If selected for funding, each French partner involved in a given project will have to sign a grant with the ANR. French applicants are therefore subject to the ANR eligibility criteria and the funding of French applicants will be regulated according to the ANR rules. Please read carefully the “Appendix for French participants” (see above).
