Pre-announcement: a call for European projects on Systems Medicine to be open soon

The French National Research Agency (ANR) will launch, in partnership with eight countries, a third ERACoSysMed joint call for transnational research projects on Systems Medicine. The call is scheduled to open on February 1st, 2019.

The ERA-NET ERACoSysMed aims to enhance the implementation of systems biology approaches in medical concepts, research and practice throughout Europe by structuring, coordinating and integrating national efforts and investments.

Aims of the call

Project proposals submitted under this call must focus on the analysis, interpretation and application of different biological and clinical data by appropriate computational models. Projects have to demonstrate the practical relevance of computational models for medical routine and their benefit for individual patients. To fit the aim of the call, projects must focus on the validation of existing computational models and their predictions using biomedical and/or clinical data or on the discovery and validation of common molecular mechanisms underlying at least two different diseases.

As of now, this call for proposals includes funding organizations from nine countries: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Slovakia and Spain.

Consortium composition

Only transnational consortia will be funded. The following conditions apply to the composition of consortia:

  • Minimum of 3 partners from 3 different participating countries; these 3 partners should be eligible for funding by one of the participating organizations
  • No more than 2 partners  from the same country
  • Maximum of 5 partners
  • Consortia including partners from Slovakia may increase the maximum number of eligible partners to six

Researchers can participate as collaborators. The following conditions apply to collaborators:

  • Clear added value for the research project should be demonstrated in the application
  • Secure funding for participation must be in place
  • Maximum of 2 collaborators per consortium

The content of the call described in this pre-announcement is indicative, may be subject to changes and is not legally binding to the funding organizations.

Systems medicine is a novel approach to medicine. It is the first step on the path to personalised medicine. Systems medicine is based on computer models, in which vast amounts of clinical data are used to analyse the health of individual patients. Systems medicine promises to further our understanding of disease mechanisms, to boost the efficacy of treatments, and to cut the costs of healthcare. In this context, the ERACoSysMed program aims to reinforce the European scientific community in the field of systems medicine and on related research themes. As an ERA-NET Cofund supported by the European Commission in the framework of Horizon 2020, it joins fourteen funding agencies in the common task to launch calls for European projects on these topics.

Estimated schedule

There will be a two-stage submission procedure with a rebuttal phase. Proposals and rebuttals must be written in English and must be submitted to the Joint Call Secretariat (JCS) by the coordinator through an electronic submission system available on the ERACoSysMed website. No other means of submission will be accepted. The call is scheduled to open on February 1st, 2019.
