Science and societies must jointly confront a double challenge: facing the multiplicity of large scale environmental changes, while preserving the socio-economic and ethical issues highlighted by the Agenda 21 on sustainable development (Earth Summit, Rio, 1992).
Facing both societal and environmental changes at large scale call for new ways to do science, beyond the needed strengthening of environmental science. It requires more disciplines involved including humanities and social sciences, interdisciplinary and systemic approaches, and research that is transdisciplinary (i.e. meaning involvement of stakeholders and science users from public, private or community sectors).
The program SOC&ENV (2012-2014) is intended to strengthen French research leadership and broaden the scope of topics covered by the previous GEC&S programme (2009-2011), giving more strength both to questions associated with the dynamics of human societies and environmental knowledge bottlenecks:
International teams are welcomed with Brazil: an agreement has been signed with Brazilian foundations in the States of Sao Paulo (FAPESP) and Pernambuco (FACEPE) to co-finance French-Brazilian projects. Other international collaborations are possible, in particular with global South. Within the context of the European Research Area, Climate-KIC projects are also welcomed.
