Résumé du projet

The goal Andromede project consists to create a new instrument for analyzing the properties of matter at the Nano scale, with high energy nanoparticles accelerated by electrostatic accelerator. The 4MV High Energy Accelerator is built by NEC Pelletron®. The project uses two ion sources, a liquid metal ion source and an electronic cyclotron resonance source to deliver atomic, molecule or cluster beams. The Time of Flight mass spectrometer associated with this accelerator makes it possible to analyze the ions emitted from surfaces under the nanoparticle impacts. The localisation of these impacts by an electron and proton emission microscope permits to obtain an ionic image with a sub-micrometric accuracy. The effectiveness of ion emission induced by nanoparticles has the advantage of not damaging or destroying the surface and thus allows the chemical analysis of Nano volumes around 1000 nm3. The project brings together a consortium of biologists, chemists, physicists and astrophysicists from the Université de Paris Sud, OrsayPhysics Company and  Schweikert Research group from Texas A&M University. This project is now being achieved. It is temporarily installed in the SuperACO building at Orsay during the completion of the scheduled IGLEX one for mid-2017. The operation has started in August 2016. The Andromede instrument is equipped with two particle beam lines after a magnetic selection, one line at 1.29 ° and another line at 90 °. The first beam line is dedicated to molecules, clusters and nanoparticles. MeV nanoparticle SIMS will be a suitable tool for molecular surface mass spectrometry analysis on a wide range of samples: biological, organic, nano-particles, µmeteorites, etc. The 90 ° line is dedicated to atomic and light molecular ion beams. The experiments is focused in nuclear astrophysics and astrochemistry. It should help to understand, the process of burning carbon in stars, and to understand the formation of pre-biotic matter in space.
