Projet FOM-IR-2-20

Microstructured optical fibers for the 2-20 infrared region

The project proposes to develop and to manufacture new fibers to open up new fields of application in the mid-infrared between 2 and 20 µm (Medical, spectroscopic and military applications) . We propose in particular to develop microstructured optical fibers with hollow core based on chalcogenide glasses transparent in the infrared. In fact, with this type of structure, it is possible to consider transmission fiber up to 20 µm while having a very low attenuation eventually below 50 dB / km . Holding the power flow of such fibers would be greatly improved compared to that of the solid core fibers .It would then be possible to propagate a laser beam in the infrared like a CO2 laser at 10.6 µm for industrial cutting or for making an optical scalpel for medical . Moreover, the laser sources like Optical Parametric Oscillators (OPO) and quantum cascade lasers (QCL) technology become increasingly essential. We bet the use of such fibers with these lasers could be a competitive advantage for applications like optical subsystems using lasers connected to silica fibers in the near IR.

The project FOM- IR- 2-20 will be organized around five tasks:

Task 0 : Coordination, communication and popular science
Task 1 : Fabrication of high optical quality IR glasses
Task 2 : Modeling of fiber structures
Task 3: Elaboration of microstructured fibers

The project consortium consists of three partners, two academic laboratories and a start-up company : the Glasses and Ceramics team from the institut des sciences chimiques de Rennes , University of Rennes 1 and the Athena team of the institute Fresnel of the University of Aix-Marseille. The last partner (subcontactor) is a start-up created in 2015 SelenOptics , which is specialized in chalcogenide microstructured optical fibers.
